You can see a chart below of what each Medicare supplement plan covers. I’ve highlighted the most popular Medigap plans.
Medicare Supplement Plan F
Plan F is the most comprehensive plan you get can get. It covers everything Medicare does not pay in full. As long as you go to a doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare you will not see a bill. The premium for a female, age 65, non-smoker in San Diego for plan F is between $135 per month and $311 per month.
There is a wide range between companies for the same exact plan F. This is why it is important to contact us to compare rates, to ensure you are not overpaying for your plan.
Medicare Supplement Plan G
Medicare supplement plan G is also a great option. The only difference between plan F and Plan G is that Plan G does not cover the Part B deductible. This deductible is associated with doctor services and is $203 for 2021.
The deductible can be spread over a few office visits or one visit, it just depends on how much the visit ends up costing. The premium for a female, age 65, non-smoker in San Diego for plan G is between $117 per month and $200 per month.
Medicare Supplement Plan N
Medicare supplement plan N is the third most popular Medigap plan. As you can see in the chart above, plan N does not cover the Part B deductible and Part B excess charges. In addition, there is $0-$20 copays at an office visit. The most you will ever pay is $20, some folks pay less than that, it just depends on the doctor.
Also, there is a $50 copay at the emergency room, unless you are admitted; in this case, the $50 copay is waived. Premiums for plan N in San Diego range between $95 – $195 per month for a 65-year-old, female, non-smoker. Plan N can be a great option for someone who wants to have the freedom of a Medigap plan but does not want to pay the high premiums as with plan F.
What Plan To Choose?
What Medicare Supplement plan in San Diego should you choose?
The right plan really depends on your budget and needs. When deciding, keep in mind the California Birthday Rule. This rule allows you to change to the same plan or a plan that has less benefit on your birthday, each year, regardless of your health. For example, if you have a plan F and you are paying $200 per month with AARP. Let’s say Blue Cross has a Plan F that is only $150. You can switch to Blue Cross’s plan F on your birthday regardless of your current health. You could also change to a Plan G or N.
However, if you have a plan G or N you cannot change to a plan F.
Because of the California Birthday Rule, I recommend anyone new to Medicare start on a plan F. This way, you have the option to change to a plan G or N in the future regardless of your health.
